Behind the Scenes at kat&co

A peek into my workday + your questions answered!

Happy Friday everyone! It’s your friend Kat - Owner + Operator of kat&co.

I don’t know about you, but for me it’s been one of those deceptively busy weeks… where the mental load is a little heavier than usual. There is a large (personal) change on the horizon, of which I will announce in the coming weeks… and it feels like the task list is never ending, constantly expanding, and defying the laws of time and space.

Relatable? SO - Let’s dive right into it!

✨ Thanks to everyone who submitted questions in my recent Ask Me Anything questionnaire - I loved reading them, and answering them. Here are some of my favorites:

“What’s one program or tool that you couldn’t run your business without?”

It’s gotta be the Google Suite… I would be utterly lost without my Google Calendar (I outline exactly how I use it in this previous post), and to be frank - if I HAD to, I could run my entire business with Google Drive / Google Sheets / Gmail / Google Meet / Google Slides etc. I cannot understate the silent rage I feel when I am forced to use Outlook - I feel most designers would agree, aesthetics matter! Plus, if you are a Mac user, the Google Suite integrates seamlessly and is more intuitive to use (IMHO).

Honorable mentions would be: Harvest (time tracking + invoicing), and Studio Designer (my preferred program for interior designers).

“What does your actual workday look like?”

Let’s be real - every day is different. I wish I was a morning routine person, I really do! But most days look similar to the following:

  • Wake up / coffee + vitamins / wash dishes / get ready

  • Morning emails / make priority list for the day / client meetings

  • Take the dog for a walk (Sadie) / lunch / scroll email updates

  • Afternoon focused work / blast the music!

  • Take the dog out + feed the dog / movement (usually yoga or strength training)

  • Make dinner + wind down 🍷

“What’s a belief about entrepreneurship that you’ve had to unlearn?”

OH man… so many. But the first thing that comes to mind is: you don’t have to show up as anyone other than yourself. As an employee you need to balance your professional growth while reflecting the values of the company you work for. There will always be a level of what you feel is right vs. what the employer feels is right.

A big adjustment for me was leaning into my own authentic voice - and it took me a while to find it. Not what I’ve been told to say, or what I’ve been told is the right way to do something… but the way I feel is right. Part of my journey as a business owner has been learning to trust my own intuition - which will always point me towards authenticity, creativity, and reliability.

(Oh… and - you don’t have to show up in a suit to get the job done. Pajama pants + a work top are just as good) 😎
